Local Resource Center Welcome Welcome to the Zero Waste Alliance Public Entity Environmental Management System Local Resource Center (LRC). This center is one of eleven US EPA designated centers to provide local support to public entities. It is part of the Public Entity Environmental Management System Resource (PEER) Center. The PEER Center evolved from federal, state and local EMS pilot programs that validated the environmental and economic benefits of EMSs in public sector organizations. (www.peercenter.net). Environmental management systems have been widely accepted in private industry to provide tools and processes that can improve an organization's ability to meet its compliance requirements, to guide it to better environmental and economical performance and to provide a framework for implementing sustainability into its core operations. Public entities are being increasingly pressured to manage their operations in a faster, safer, more effective manner. Environmental Management Systems (EMS) have been found to provide the same benefits for public entities as they do for private industry. The ZWA LRC team has substantial expertise in EMS design, implementation, auditing, sustainability integration and ISO 14001 registration in the public and private sector. We provide

Projects NW Pub 1: The first Northwest Public Entity EMS group implementation process assisting three public entities in the Northwest was completed in mid-2005. The development process consists of seven workshops plus on site and telephone assistance over an 18-month period. The organizations all made good progress in the development of their EMSs and one is continuing to ISO 14001 certification.
